Major Signs of the Day of Judgement
1. The Appearance of Mahdi
The appearance of Imam Mahdi is one of the major signs of the Day of Judgement. In hadiths, the Mahdi is described in detail. He will be from the lineage of Fatimah, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). His name will be Muhammad, and his father’s name will be Abdullah. He will closely resemble the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Initially, his rule will begin in Arabia and then spread across the world. His reign will last for seven years.
Birth of Imam Mahdi: In the end times, when Muslims are overwhelmed from all sides, engaged in continuous wars, and Christians have established rule in Syria, the oppression of disbelievers will increase everywhere. Imam Mahdi will be born in Madinah. There will no longer be a powerful Muslim government in Arabia; the Christians will even reach Khaybar, establishing their power there. The remaining Muslims will take refuge in Madinah.
How Muslims will recognize Mahdi? At that time, Imam Mahdi will be in Madinah, and the pious, the saints, and the devout will seek him out to pledge allegiance to him. However, due to fear of being recognized and made a leader, he will move from Madinah to Makkah. While circumambulating the Kaaba between the Black Stone and the Station of Abraham, people will recognize him and gather around him, pledging allegiance to him as their leader. During this pledge, a voice will be heard from the heavens, announcing: “This is Allah’s appointed leader, Imam Mahdi.”
Mahdi’s Expeditions: When news of this pledge spreads, armies from Madinah will gather in Makkah. Believers from Syria, Iraq, and Yemen will also join him. A force will come to fight Imam Mahdi, but when they reach a desert between Makkah and Madinah, near a mountain, all except two men will be swallowed by the earth. Imam Mahdi will then return to Madinah, visit the Prophet’s Mosque, and proceed to Syria.
A fierce battle will occur between the Muslims and Christians in Damascus, where many Muslims will be martyred. Eventually, the Muslims will achieve victory. Imam Mahdi will then conquer Constantinople. After the conquest, he will head back to Syria. Soon after, the Antichrist (Dajjal) will emerge.
Imam Mahdi will live for forty-five to forty-eight years and will pass away. Jesus (peace be upon him) will lead his funeral prayer, and he will be buried in Jerusalem.
2. The Emergence of Dajjal
The emergence of Dajjal is the second of the major signs of the Day of Judgement. The hadiths describe Dajjal in great detail, with every prophet warning their nation about his trials. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described Dajjal’s appearance as one of the major signs of the Day of Judgement. He will appear between Syria and Iraq and will move towards Damascus. He will claim divinity. The word “Kafir” (disbeliever) will be inscribed between his eyes, and he will be blind in his right eye.
Miraculous Power of Dajjal: He will remain on earth for forty days, and Allah will allow various miraculous events and deceptions to occur through him. He will kill people and bring them back to life, command the sky to rain, and the earth to produce crops. He will pass by a desolate place and command it to reveal its treasures, which will follow him like swarms of bees. He will kill a man and then bring him back to life, but he will fail to kill him again.
Dajjal’s Expeditions: Dajjal will travel across the earth, entering every city except Makkah and Madinah, which will be protected by angels. His trial will be the greatest trial in human history. After conquering Constantinople, Imam Mahdi will be in Damascus when Dajjal emerges between Syria and Iraq, first claiming prophethood and then divinity. He will gather seventy thousand Jews from Isfahan to follow him and will spread corruption and chaos across the land, eventually reaching Yemen. Many misguided people will join him. He will attempt to enter Makkah and Madinah but will be prevented by the angels. Three earthquakes will strike Madinah, causing those with weak faith to flee and fall into Dajjal’s trap.
Who will Kill Dajjal? Dajjal will then proceed towards Syria, where Imam Mahdi will already be present. Suddenly, Jesus (peace be upon him) will descend from the heavens. Imam Mahdi will offer to transfer all leadership to Jesus, but he will decline, stating that his mission is to kill Dajjal.
The following morning, Jesus will lead the Muslim army against Dajjal’s forces. Riding a horse with a spear in his hand, he will attack Dajjal’s army. During the battle, the breath of Jesus will extend as far as his gaze and every disbeliever who comes in contact with it will perish. Dajjal, upon seeing Jesus, will try to flee, but he will be caught and killed at the Gate of Ludd.
3. The Return of Prophet Isa (Jesus) PBUH
Descent of Jesus (peace be upon him) from the heavens and his killing of Dajjal are major signs of the Day of Judgement. The belief in the descent of Jesus is confirmed by the Qur’an, numerous hadiths, and the consensus of the Muslim community. Believing in this event is essential to being a Muslim.
Jesus’ Return in Damascus: When Dajjal has been driven away from Makkah and Madinah. Imam Mahdi and the Jews will be engaged in intense battles. One day, at the time of Asr prayer, after the call to prayer has been made and people are preparing for prayer, they will suddenly see Jesus descending from the heavens with his hands resting on the wings of two angels. His head will be bowed, and drops of water will fall from it; when he raises his head, sparkling pearls will drop. He will descend onto the eastern minaret of the white mosque in Damascus and then climb down using a ladder.
Missions of Jesus: Jesus (peace be upon him) will establish justice and fairness, break the cross, kill swine, and abolish the jizya tax. He will kill the Dajjal, and every disbeliever who comes in contact with his breath will die. He will kill Dajjal at the Gate of Ludd, and wealth will become so abundant that no one will accept it.
After the death of Imam Mahdi, Jesus (peace be upon him) will take charge of all matters. Even after his descent, Jesus will remain a prophet, as a prophet can never be deposed from his prophetic mission. However, during that time, he will act as a reformer and just ruler under the law of Muhammad (peace be upon him). He will restore the well-being of the Muslims and, following divine command, will lead them to Mount Sinai.
Who will Lead after Jesus: After living for forty to forty-five years, during which he will marry and have children, He will pass away. His death will occur in Madinah, where he will be buried beside the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). After His passing, a man named Jahjah from the tribe of Qahṭān will become the ruler, followed by several pious and just rulers. However, goodness will gradually diminish, and evil will start to increase.
4. Gog and Magog
One of the signs of the last days is the release of Gog & Magog. After the death of Imam Mahdi, Jesus (peace be upon him) will take over the administration, and life will be peaceful and comfortable. Then Allah will reveal to Jesus that He is about to release a people against whom no one will have the power to fight. He will be instructed to take His servants to Mount Sinai.
This refers to the release of Gog and Magog, a nation mentioned in the Qur’an as well. They are descendants of Yafith, the son of Noah, and live beyond the Frozen Sea in the north. The path to them is through mountains, which were sealed by Dhu al-Qarnayn using molten copper and iron plates. Gog and Magog are powerful people, trapped behind a strong iron wall between two mountains. It is one of the major signs of the Day of Judgment that Gog & Magog will break down this wall.
Breaking Through the Wall: When Gog and Magog break through the wall, they will descend from everywhere, and pass by the Sea of Galilee, they will drink all its water, leaving none for those who follow. Their emergence will cause great distress to Jesus and the Muslims, there will be a great shortage of food, even though a bull’s head will be considered more valuable than a hundred dinars.
Destruction of Gog & Magog: Jesus will pray to Allah against them, and Allah will afflict them with a disease in their necks that will kill them all. After the destruction of Gog and Magog, the earth will be filled with a terrible stench from their dead bodies. In response to the prayers of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him), Allah will send large birds with long necks to carry away the corpses to wherever Allah will. Then, a heavy rain will fall over the entire earth. This rain will cleanse the earth, washing away all the filth and foul odor, making it clean and pure once again. It marks one of the major Day of Judgment signs in Islam
5. The Rising of the Sun from the West
The rising of the sun from the west and becoming a night unusually long are the major signs of the Day of Judgement.
A Night will Become Unusually Long: After the appearance of the smoke and the earth-swallowing incidents, during the month of Dhul-Hijjah, a night will become unusually long, so much so that travelers will become anxious, children will grow restless from repeatedly waking up, and animals will begin to cry out in anticipation of daybreak. Finally, after what feels like three nights, the sun will rise from the west with a faint light, appearing as if it is eclipsed.
Doors of Repentance will be Closed: At that moment, the door of repentance will close, and no one’s faith or repentance will be accepted anymore. The sun will slowly ascend until it reaches the height it usually does a little before noon, and then it will begin to set again towards the west, resuming its normal course. This occurrence will mark the beginning of the final countdown to the Day of Judgment, and 120 years after this event, the trumpet will be blown, signaling the end of the world.
6. The Emergence of Dabbat al-Ard
One of the major signs of the Day of Judgement is the emergence of the Beast of the Earth. This event is mentioned in both the Quran and Hadith. Shortly after the sun rises from the west, the mountain of Safa in Makkah will split open, and from it, a strange and wondrous creature will emerge. This beast will have the ability to speak to people and will move swiftly across the earth.
Differentiating Believers and Disbelievers: The beast will carry the ring of Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him) and the staff of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him). With the staff of Moses, it will draw a shining line on the foreheads of the believers, causing their faces to radiate with light. On the other hand, the ring of Solomon will place a black mark on the noses or necks of the disbelievers, causing their faces to become darkened.
In the presence of crowds, the beast will declare who is a believer and who is a disbeliever. After completing this task, the beast will disappear.
7. The Gentle Wind and the Death of All Muslims
Blowing the gentle wind and the death of all Muslims around the world are also the major signs of the day of Judgement. Following the emergence of the Beast of the Earth, a gentle and refreshing wind will blow from the south. This wind will be cool and pleasant. It will reach every Muslim, and a small mark or wound will appear under their armpit, leading to their peaceful death. This will happen to all Muslims, even if one is hiding in a cave; the wind will find them, and they will pass away in that place.
After this event, there will no longer be any Muslims left on the surface of the earth. The only people remaining will be disbelievers, and the earth will be filled with the worst of humanity, known as Sharār al-Nās (the wicked ones). This event marks the end of righteousness on earth, and it signifies one of the Islamic signs of Day of Judgement
